Whether you’re looking for scenic views, a peaceful retreat, or a bit of a workout, these local spots will get you moving and feeling good. Ready to lace up your shoes and explore? Let’s dive into the best walking trails Salina has to offer!

Marty Bender Trail: For a Natural Variety

The Marty Bender Trail is one you may be familiar with, because of it’s location. We’re happy to enlighten you because this trail offers a little bit of everything —river views, hills, wooded areas, and open pastures—all in one walk. The trail offers something new around every bend, so it’s perfect for those who like a mix of scenery on their strolls.

Bonus points for the hidden gem: a swing! It’s the perfect spot to pause and take in the view. Imagine sitting there, gently swaying while soaking up the natural beauty around you. Whether you’re hiking solo or with friends, this trail provides a peaceful escape.

Length: 2.8 Mile loop

Elevation Gain: 187 feet

Terrain: Varied, but all natural.

Access: Located at the corner of East Schilling Road and South Holmes Road.

Indian Rock Trail / Indian Falls: Hike to Stunning Views

If you’re up for a bit of a challenge, the Indian Rock and Indian Falls trails are a must. Known for its steep climbs and incredible overlook views, this trail rewards your effort with some of the best scenery in town. From the top, you’ll get sweeping views of the area—perfect for catching your breath and taking in the moment. It’s one of the best places to take in a gorgeous Kansas sunset. 

The trail can get steep in places, so it’s a great option if you want to turn your walk into a mini-hike. Just be sure to wear good shoes and bring your camera, because the views are worth it!

Length: Each loop is a little less than a mile.

Elevation Gain: 49 feet

Terrain: Varied, but all natural

Access: Parking is located south of Gypsum Avenue on Glennifer Hill Road.

River Woods: Serenity by the Water

For a more relaxed vibe, head to River Woods. This trail is all about wooded paths and calming river views. As you walk, you’ll be surrounded by trees and the gentle sound of the river flowing beside you. It’s the kind of place where you can completely disconnect from the hustle and bustle and just enjoy the peacefulness of nature.

River Woods is perfect if you’re looking for a quiet, scenic stroll, and the shady trees make it a great spot for warm-weather walks. Whether you’re walking alone or with a group, this trail is all about relaxation and taking in the beauty of the natural world.

Length: 1.6 mile loop

Elevation Gain: 49 feet

Terrain: Natural

Access: Parking is located at the far east end of Cloud Street. Walk up and across the Levee. The trail entrance is just south of where you park.

Smoky Hills Audubon Wildlife Sanctuary: A Walk on the Wild Side

If you’re a nature lover, you’ll want to check out the Audubon Wildlife Sanctuary. This area is home to a variety of birds and wildlife, making it a fantastic spot for those who love birdwatching or just being surrounded by the sights and sounds of nature. The walking paths are peaceful, and you’re likely to spot some critters along the way, adding a fun twist to your walk.

Elevation Gain: 52 feet

Terrain: Natural

Access: From Interstate 70, go south on North Halstead Road, then east on West Stimmel Road, which will take you straight to the Sanctuary.
