What the Heck is Pickleball?
Imagine if tennis, badminton, and ping-pong got together and had a baby—that’s pickleball! Played on a court about a quarter the size of a tennis court, pickleball is an easy-to-learn game that’s as competitive or as casual as you want it to be.
The rules are simple: hit the perforated plastic ball (think oversized wiffle ball) over the net with your paddle (which looks like a beefed-up ping-pong paddle) and keep it inside the court. Easy, right?
You can play it with your Grandma: Whether you’re 8 or 80, pickleball is for everyone. It’s gentle on the joints, making it a hit among older adults, but fast-paced enough to keep younger players on their toes.
Social Vibes: Pickleball is as much about the social scene as it is about the sport. Doubles matches, where four players take to the court, are especially popular. It’s a great way to meet new people and enjoy some friendly competition.
Quick and Easy to Learn: You don’t need years of practice to start having fun. Most beginners can pick up the basics in just a few games, making it accessible and enjoyable right from the get-go.
Small Court, Big Fun: The smaller court size means less running around—perfect if you’re looking for some movement or a workout without the exhaustion. Plus, it’s easy to set up in driveways or smaller spaces.
Where Did Pickleball Come From?
Pickleball was invented in 1965 by three dads—Joel Pritchard, Bill Bell, and Barney McCallum—looking to entertain their bored kids during a summer vacation. With a little creativity and whatever sports equipment they had on hand, they created a game that’s now beloved by millions.
